Most of the carpet manufacturers recommend the “truck-mounted hot water extraction” method of cleaning over all other methods. This is the method that we use more often, this is the deepest method to clean carpets.
Should I have my carpet dry cleaned or steam cleaned?
As mentioned earlier, most major carpet manufacturers recommend truck-mounted hot water extraction as the preferred method. Hot-water extraction done properly by a certified trained technician removes more soil and spots than dry cleaning methods.
How long does the carpet take to dry?
The normal drying time is anywhere from 6 to 12 hours. The carpet will only be damp to the touch. Depending on weather conditions, room temperature, air flow, and overall conditions this time can vary. During winter weather we recommend to have your heater on at about 75 to 80 degrees for faster drying. We can also provide an air blower for initial airflow to speed up the drying process. We also provide you with shoe booties so that you can walk on your carpet while it is drying.

I've heard it's best to put off having your carpet cleaned as long as possible, is this true?
The reason for this is because some unexperienced carpet cleaners will use very strong solutions when it is not needed. In fact, many of the major carpet mills today recommend professional cleaning at least once per year. The build up of soil in your carpet in combination with foot traffic creates abrasion that breaks down your carpet’s fibers.

The higher the traffic in a given area, the more often the carpet will need cleaning. This myth however comes from customers that have experienced poor carpet performance after professionally cleaned. This will actually take some of the manufacturers stain resistant qualities of the carpet making it more easily stainable. We strongly recommend to re-apply carpet protector after professional cleanings.
Can you get the pet odor out of my carpet?
California Steam Clean prides itself on being the best at odor removal. We can get rid of odors the other companies wouldn’t know how to deal with. The problem with pet odor is that it can be much deeper than it first appears. Pet urine can easily soak through the backing of the carpet into the padding underneath. In more severe cases the urine can penetrate into the sub-floor beneath the padding. This creates a problem that is multi-layered.
The urine also provides for the growth of bacteria. This, in turn, contributes to a worsening of the odor problem and can contribute to permanent color loss of the carpet fiber.
To eliminate this problem the urine must be removed or neutralized from each of the layers effected. If the contamination is light and limited to only the face yarn of the carpet then the cleaning with a topical deodorizer may effectively remove the odor.
In the most severe cases, replacement of the carpet padding, treatment of the under-side of the carpet and the sub-floor may be required. Our professional carpet cleaning technicians can help you asses the contamination and help you make the most cost affective and best way of removing that odor. Sometimes it is best to just replace the carpet. Even though we have been very successful in removal of odors, we cannot guarantee complete removal of the odor.
Left untreated over a period of time pet odor can become absorbed into many of the porous materials in your home. Draperies, sheet rock, upholstered furniture, base-boards, even the concrete foundation are just a few of the materials that can absorb these odors. For more information about our odor removal treatments and methods go to our carpet cleaning page or simply call.
I sometimes smell an odor when the carpet was cleaned, what is that?
The smell that you are experiencing is most likely the cause of a dormant odor. Dormant odors are hidden odors you can’t smell until some type of moisture activates them. Normally these odors are caused by a pet accident or bacterial growth because something was not picked up correctly.
If present, dormant odors will usually improve when the carpet dries. Because this is a pre existing condition we are not responsible for dormant odors. To eliminate dormant odors, the source has to be neutralized or eliminated. Ask us about odor removal.
Do you treat for flees on carpets?
No, please contact a pest control company or we can refer you to one. The treatment for flees should be done prior to the carpet cleaning.
Do you offer anything for allergy relief?
The average person sheds about a gram and a half of skin each day. These particles are very small and get deeply embedded in our carpets, upholstery, mattresses, and bedding. These particles are the food source for dust mites. Dust mites have a very potent allergen in their droppings that is known to cause up to 25% of allergies worldwide.
California Steam Clean can clean and treat your carpets, upholstery and fabrics with special hypo-allergenic, non toxic cleaning agents that neutralize allergens for up to six months.
Last time my carpets were cleaned the stains came back, why is that?
Can be caused by two things; One, the spot or area had heavy soil buildup due to improper carpet maintenance and is going to need a second cleaning. Two a residue was left behind in an attempt to clean up a spill that in return attracts dirt back to that same spot making the spot re-appear. Some un-experienced carpet cleaners will over wet the carpet driving soil deeper into the carpet and contributing to wicking.
Wicking is the process where the soil that is in the carpet backing or even padding works its way to the surface in the drying process after the carpet has been cleaned. There is treatment available for wicking but cleaning the carpet is first recommended to find out what areas need more attention.
What are those ugly black lines around the baseboards and under doorways?
If you have light colored carpet, you may have experienced these dark lines that appear on the carpet. This soiling is called filtration soiling because it comes from air passing through the carpet as it is attempting to get through the crack between the carpet and the baseboard or under a closed door. As the air passes through the edge of the carpet pile, this microscopic soiling is deposited there (hence the term filtration soiling). This occurs over a significant period of time and is not noticed until a build up has occurred.
This type of soiling is difficult to remove because the soil particles are so fine that they penetrate deep into the carpet pile, sometimes into the backing of the carpet. Can it be removed? Sometimes. With special products, time and effort, reasonable results can sometimes be achieved. To help prevent filtration soiling, vacuum and wipe the edges of the carpeting on a regular basis. Be careful around the tackstrip on the edge of the carpeting, it could nick your fingers.
What is Ozone?
What is Ozone?
Ozone is often referred to as nature’s own purifier. It is eviden at the seashore, in rain forests and after thunderstorms. We are all throughly aware of the protection the ozone layer affords us. Ozone also referred to as activated oxygen or trivalent oxygen is created naturally in our environment either through electricity, photosynthesis or by ultraviolet radiation from the sun. It makes up approximately 20% of the air we breathe everyday. Ozone is created when one of these forces cause Oxygen to split into two separate atoms. The freed atom then attaches itself to a O2 molecule, recombining to create Ozone. The word “Ozone” is derived from the Greek word “ozien” which means, “to smell”. In high levels ozone is bluish in color, which is why the sky is blue. Ozone was discovered in the late 1800’s and is classified as the second strongest oxidizer in the world. In has been used over the last century to purify water and eliminate a wide range of odors in as a wide range of applications. In the most effective types of product the ozone is generated by high-voltage corona discharge duplicating the way lightning creates it.
How Does Ozone Work To Eliminate Odors?
As ozone is created it floats freely in the air and water. By nature it is an unstable molecule and has a half-life of approximately 20 minutes. Shortly after ozone is created it begins to break back down. It will cast off the first ozone atom, which will recombine with either another oxygen atom, reverting back to simple Oxygen (O2), or it will recombine with another gaseous element forming an inert gas losing all of its odor characteristics. Picture a room full of smoke; it is the phenol gas that is released that is the basis of the odor. It is in the air and on the surface of all areas exposed to the smoke. When introduced to that environment, the ozone quickly breaks down as it combines with the phenol gas molecule destroying all odor characteristics.
What are the Benefits of Using Ozone?
Ozone is very effective in eliminating ordors including tobacco smoke, human and pet odors, food odors, mold and mildew odors, garbage odors, renovation odors and much more. It is not a re-odorant. It totally destroys the offending gases that are the source of everything we smell. Unlike many other deodorizing methods, ozone actually searches out and destorys the problem gases. It will react with contaminants in the air, water, fabrics and on other surface of the walls and ceilings. Unlike other types of air purification systems, an ozone generator does not depend on the air passing through the machine to do its job. Ozone generators also produce large quanities of ions via the corona discharge. The ions cause the dust particles to agglomerate, and precipitate from the air leaving a cleaner environment.
