If you’re a dog owner, you know how easy it is for your couch to develop that infamous “dog smell.” Dogs usually have a strong, musky smell because they secrete oil, which promotes healthy skin and fur growth. Unfortunately, this musky odor seeps into your upholstery, warranting deep upholstery cleaning to get everything back to normal.

Keep reading to find out how to get the dog smell out of your couch.

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is naturally absorbent, which is why it’s often used to get lingering odors out of carpets and upholstered furniture. You don’t need to go overboard with this. Simply sprinkle some on the affected area of your couch and let sit for 10-20 minutes before vacuuming it back up. If the odor persists, you may have to leave it on for 24 hours. Once 24 hours have passed, the smell should either be gone or greatly reduced.

Regardless of how long you leave it on, make sure your animals are nowhere near the couch so they don’t accidentally ingest it. Baking soda poisoning can result in muscle spasms and heart failure.

2. Pet Sprays

If you want to get pet odor out of your couch, use cleaner that’s specifically formatted to treat these kinds of smells. There are many pet sprays on the market that can help eliminate and treat pet odors. While these sprays are great to use on the surface, they may not penetrate odors that have soaked deep into the couch such as those resulting from an accident.

3. Wash and Air Dry Your Cushions

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. In many cases, pet odors aren’t affecting your couch as much as they are your blankets, pillows, and cushions. Washing them or letting them air out may be a useful tool to reduce pet odors. If this removes the odors, it can save you both time and money that you’d otherwise be spending on cleaning the entire couch.

4. Fabric Refreshers

Fabric refresher sprays help eliminate pet odors at the source, leaving behind a fresh, clean scent. Usually, these fabric refreshers will only treat the surface of the product, however, there are animal-friendly sprays on the market that are specifically formulated to kill pet odors at the source. These are usually great options to freshen everything up right before company comes over.

5. Hire a Professional Upholstery Cleaning Company

A professional upholstery cleaning company can remove pet odors from the source. Professional upholstery cleaning companies have the resources needed to treat any kind of upholstered furniture, so you can trust that your couch is being cleaned correctly.
