Is Your Kid Allergic to Mold? Here Are 5 Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Children with mold allergies may suffer from headaches and sinus infections. Mold remediation can remove mold from your home so your children no longer suffer.

Sometimes, it’s easy to discover mold inside your home. However, sometimes the first sign of a mold infestation is your child suffering from allergies. While allergies have a number of causes, mold is one of them. Your child could be allergic to mold. Here are five common signs your child is suffering from a mold allergy (and how a mold remediation company can help).

1. Congestion

Like seasonal allergies, mold allergies commonly cause congestion. As such, your child may suffer from a stuffy, itchy nose or constant sneezing. However, congestion can also lead to a runny nose, reduced taste or smell, and even minor body aches. In more extreme cases, congestion can even lead to nosebleeds. While not as common, this is a symptom you shouldn’t ignore when it occurs.

2. Headaches

In most cases, headaches in children are harmless. But if your child isn’t used to getting them or is getting them more frequently, it could be a sign of mold exposure. Mold is a type of fungi that can be brought indoors or develop as a result of sudden water damage or high humidity levels. Unfortunately, headaches are a common symptom of mold because moldy spores irritate your child’s sinuses, resulting in a sinus headache.

The easiest way to determine whether or not a headache is being caused by mold is to see if symptoms start when they enter a particular room or if they stop when they exit.

3. Coughing And Shortness of Breath

Another common sign that your child has a mold allergy is if they are constantly coughing or feeling like they’re short of breath. Mold spores can be toxic, so if your child is unknowingly breathing in all day, it’ll cause them to cough. Likewise, inhaling these spores can cause your child’s airway to constrict, making it more difficult to breathe.

Furthermore, this could result in an increased production of mucus, since this is the body’s way of trying to get the mold spores out of your child’s lungs.

4. Watery Eyes

If your child is suffering from watery or itchy eyes, it may be another symptom of a mold allergy. This allergy works a little differently than the others on this list simply because of how the body reacts to it. For example, the body remembers this type of mold interaction. Then the body reacts whenever it comes into contact with it again. This causes your child’s immune system to release histamine. Histamine causes itchy and watery eyes any time they enter a room with mold.

5. Skin Irritations

Sometimes, your child may be too young to tell you what’s going on inside their body. Parents should look out for skin irritations. Keep in mind this can happen at any age. Children may have dry patches of skin or feel overly sensitive in one area. Parents, look out for areas of discoloration, too.
