How to Treat Mold in Your Bathroom

Mold remediation can help treat and remove bathroom mold.

People say your bathroom should feel like a sanctuary. But how many sanctuaries are covered in unsightly mold and mildew? Bathroom mold is common. And, unfortunately, it’s a problem we all face. Mold remediation can treat bathroom mold. Here’s how.

Common Causes of Bathroom Mold

Out of all the rooms in your house, your bathroom is most at risk of mold. Mold thrives in warm, damp environments. So, you guessed it: your bathroom is the perfect spot! Every time you turn on your sink, you’re making it easier for mold to grow.

However, one of the big reasons mold grows so well in bathrooms has a lot to do with the bacteria living in them. For example, bathrooms are routinely infested with E.coli, fecal bacteria, and Legionella bacteria (to name a few). These, coupled with dust from your air vent, feed mold spores. All this does is keep them around longer.

Signs of Bathroom Mold

One look in your shower and you can determine you have mold. If you have black spots or black patches growing in your shower or around your sink, you have mold. Other common signs of bathroom mold include:

  • Musky odors
  • Spongy floors
  • Humidity/poor drying

Other common signs of mold not limited to bathrooms include coughing, watery eyes, and headaches.

You Found Mold. How Do You Treat It?

Treating mold depends on how severe it is. If you only notice a few dark patches, grab some bleach, ammonia, or other mold cleaner and spray it on the affected area. Follow the instructions listed on the bottle and keep applying and scraping until the mold is gone. Just be sure if you’re doing this to wear a mask and that there is sufficient ventilation. Also, be careful never to mix bleach and ammonia together as this is incredibly dangerous. You can also create your own formula by mixing water and vinegar.

However, if the damage is too severe and these products aren’t working, you’ll need to call a mold remediation specialist. They have the tools and resources you’ll need to effectively get rid of mold. This is because there are countless species of mold, many of which need specialized treatment.

Another reason you may need mold remediation services is if you think you have mold, but can’t find it. For example, this could be a classic case of a water leak behind your bathroom wall that has developed into mold.
