Less-Known Signs of Water Damage You Should Know About

Did you recently find mold? It may be a sign of water damage and a water damage restoration company can help.

You should be on the lookout for water damage in your home. The last thing you want is mold to grow and cause health issues or to have serious structural damage that can be hazardous and costly. There are plenty of signs to check when looking for water damage in your home, such as discoloration in areas or a musty smell. But there’s more to it than that. There are signs that you might not even consider. Today we’re going to look at some of the less-known signs of water damage and how you can look out for them with the help of a water damage restoration team.

A Sudden Increase in Your Utility Bill

When we think of looking for signs of water damage in our homes, normally we think of physical signs. While there are plenty of those on our list, here’s one that doesn’t require you to sniff out physical clues. If you look at your water bill and the cost spikes up out of the blue, it could be a sign that you have a leak somewhere in your home causing water damage. If there’s only a change of a couple of dollars, then there are probably no leaks.

Check your appliances and sinks to see if anything is leaking there. If you find nothing, you may have a burst pipe somewhere in your home.

Ceilings, Walls, and Floors That Warp

Have you noticed that your walls, floors, or ceilings have a weird warping to them? This could be because water can be heavy in large amounts and the more soaked these areas get, the more they start to give under the pressure of it. This is a major concern because if you do have warping in your home, it could mean serious structural damage that needs to be addressed immediately. If you see warping anywhere in your home, get someone out immediately to assess the damage. This is not a situation you want to put off until later.

Mold

Okay, so it might be a bit of a stretch to call this one “lesser-known,” but it’s an important one to make note of nonetheless. Mold can grow and spread through your home and cause not only structural damage but physical ailments as well, such as asthma and serious respiratory issues. In this case, it’s recommended that you hire a professional to come in and remove any mold from your home.

Check Under Your Sink

You’d be surprised at how such an easy thing can go unnoticed. While it can be common for a little bit of water to make its way underneath your sink, it’s recommended that you keep an eye on it. Even the smallest bit of leakage can lead to serious water damage. Tighten up those pipes. If you suspect a leak, remove everything from underneath the sink and run your water. You should be able to tell where a leak might be.

Check Your Pipes

One thing that can cause water damage is a burst pipe. While this sounds basic enough, you have to remember that you can’t always see the pipes in your home. In order to check your pipes you have to use your ears instead of your eyes. If you put your ear to the wall and hear the sound of dripping water, this means that you have a leaky pipe in your wall that can (and probably already has) caused water damage.
